Curriculum Enhancement Initiative
The purpose of the Partnership Garcia was to implement change in the science classroom by developing a model science curriculum that could be used to promote the development of inquiry skills or practices in the science classroom. The goal of the curriculum, entitled Shifting from Cookbook to Inquiry, was to provide a model for training pre-service and practicing teachers, as well as science teacher educators, who could then adapt or develop their own curriculum.
The curriculum was designed to scaffold the introduction and use of scientific practices or “process skills” that enhance student engagement in the inquiry process. The skills that were identified and included in the curriculum were as follows: identifying variables and controls, making hypotheses and predictions, graphing, making data tables and interpreting data, designing experiments, posing testable questions, and designing a research study.
