University-School Community Engagement
The purpose of this initiative is manifold. First, this partnership was designed to increase interaction and engagement between Texas Woman’s University’s (TWU) undergraduate bilingual education students through the department’s sponsored organization called BESO (Bilingual Education Student Organization) and the two-way bilingual classrooms at a local Denton campus, Woodrow Wilson Elementary. The primary goals of the initiative are to purchase, read, and donate bilingual and Spanish literature for the two English and Spanish partner classes per grade level at Woodrow Wilson two times per year, in fall and in spring.
Through this initiative, TWU’s BESO students work closely with students from kindergarten to 5th grade who are learning content through both Spanish and English. Second, the partnership provides needed (primarily Spanish language) literature for the teachers and the students in the programs. There is a paucity of Spanish literature available to the students, so our collaboration helps to fill this gap. Third, the work involved in raising funds to purchase the books for the classrooms provides the BESO students with leadership opportunities, problem-solving skills, and real-life, hands-on learning.
The primary stakeholders are TWU students who identify as BESO members or those whom are seeking certification in English as a Second Language or Bilingual Education, and the Woodrow Wilson two-way dual language teachers and students.
