  • About Our Practice

Texas A&M University-Texarkana at Northeast Texas Community College is located directly across the from Chapel Hill Independent School District. Although small, the Chapel Hill district is an accurate representation of the diverse public school population our pre-service teachers will soon encounter. This proximity and environment offer our university teacher preperation program an excellent opportunity for a lab school-type partnership. In order to integrate our education students into the actual classroom as quickly as possible, our teacher preperation program designates the first education courses students take--ED 321: Foundations of Education and RDG 350: Emergent Literacy Development--as lab school courses

  • Key Practice Features

The Lab School Partnership allows students to mix "traditional" faculty instruction with hands-on classroom teaching. Students spend Mondays in class for what might be considered “traditional” content instruction and Wednesdays in classrooms student teaching. This schedule has worked quite well thus far. Students observe, complete assignments, or work with specific teachers who have asked for assistance in their classrooms while learning necessary foundation content. Key features of the initiative include:

    • Weekly classroom-based instruction paired with weekly lab school-based classroom teaching practice
    • Faculty and classroom teacher observations of student teaching practice keyed to best-practices
    • Ongoing professional development workshops for teacher candidates
