Fall 2013
The University of Texas of the Permian Basin | AVID Teacher Preparation Initiative

UTPB produces over 90% of the local teachers for Ector County Independent School District (ECISD) and Midland Independent School District MISD), both of whom use AVID as a tool in their College Readiness programs. In order to ensure fidelity in implementing strategies adopted by AVID in our courses, the UTPB College of Education AVID site team co-created the Teacher Preparation Initiative (TPI) guidebook over the course of the last three years. The site team utilized the tools in “AVID frameworks, methodologies and strategies” and infused them into the College of Education programs.
What makes the practice exemplary, creative and innovative is the creation of a Teacher Preparation Guide book that enhances professors’ ability to build on concepts candidates have learned in the K-12 AVID classrooms while preparing the candidates to be K-12 teachers. In creating the TPI guidebook, the UTPB College of Education AVID site team created instructional maps and course planning maps that can be recreated for other campuses.
