Elementary Mathematics Methods
The students are provided opportunities to practice one-to-one questioning skills, reflect on the implementation of student-centered practices in the mathematics classroom, and use children’s mathematical thinking to begin to understand, assess, and base classroom instruction on children’s current mathematical understandings and strategies.
The course includes two semester long assignments: 1) Case Study Interviews of Children’s Mathematical Thinking; and 2) Math Pals 1st Grade Problem Posing. The Case Study Interviews require student teachers to work with one elementary aged child for two mathematical interviews during the semester. Class time is spent discussing relevant readings on children’s mathematical thinking and reviewing clinical interviewing techniques. The Math Pals entails both group work and individual student work and involves collaboration with a first grade classroom from a local school district.
