  • About Our Program

    The elementary education program in the School of Education at St. Edward’s University began placing teaching candidates in public classrooms in the early 1980’s. Through the years, the program at St. Edward’s continued to rely on hands-on experience in the real school world for all teaching candidates at the elementary level.

    St. Edward’s invested in primary partnerships with two Austin elementary schools. The foundation of our partnerships is the belief in shared benefits. In-depth partnerships such as these provide opportunities for intensive growth for teaching candidates as well as personalized assistance for children.

  • Key Program Features

    The St. Edward’s University teacher preparation program combines research-based instruction with immersion into the public school arena. As teaching candidates learn about public education, they are simultaneously engaged in public school classrooms. These real world experiences provide meaningful professional development while supporting classroom teachers. Key aspects of the program include:

    • Connecting theory to practice
    • Emphasizing interactions with stakeholders
    • Using technology to further core concepts
    • Promoting ongoing informal research

Field-Based Learning

Field-based learning opportunities allow teacher candidates to integrate academic and practitioner knowledge.  Field-based programs allow teacher candidates to:
